Update from the Mom

Mia is doing better today. I didn't like the way she reacted to the appetite stimulant, cyproheptadine, becoming dazed and groggy and zonked out. She did start eating, but I'll be checking with the vet on whether to continue giving it to her. She seems to be getting back to her regular self this morning. Official Morning Litter Cleaner (beandad) informed me that she pooped and then pooped again after he cleaned the litter the first time. She likes a clean box, this one. I had left some crunchy goodness out over night, and she ate half of that. I put down a can of stinky goodness for her this morning and she went straight to it. She didn't eat it all in one sitting, but kept coming back to it. She's never been a big fan of stinky goodness until now, so I need some recommendations from you guys. The vet recommended Fancy Feast. What's good nutrtition wise and what are the favorite flavors? Thanks all.

We both like Fancy Feast! Ghost's favorite is the grilled chicken & Mia's favorite is the ocean whitefish. Hope Mia is feeling better soon. (Ghost isn't eating well either - she has had to take the appetite stimulating stuff before too)

I know a lot of people do not like Iams due to the controversy surrounding their products, but Isis and I do not like anything but Iams. We like the turkey and giblets and salmon flavors.

Keep getting better, Ms. Mia! If you need anything, we're close by!

Fancy Feast is made by Friskies, so it's a good brand. Having a variety of flavors will help with keeping her appetite stimulated. Two, very good but stinky flavors are the Tuna Seafood Filet and the Sardines, Shrimp, & Crab Filet. Also, those with gravies are very good as well - Grilled Beef, Grilled Chicken, Grilled Tuna, Grilled Turkey, Grilled Salmon, Sliced Beef, Sliced Chicken, & Sliced Turkey.

These are some favorites in our house. We hope Mia is feeling better.

Brach and Kukka don't want anything to do with soft food. I've tried giving it to them numerous times, but they just sniff it and walk away.

Wish I could help! We'll just continue sending healing thoughts her way...

Fancy Feast and Sheba are the favorites around here. The Meezers mostly like the chicken and turkey flavors, but will eat cod or sole. We all hope that Mia feels better real soon!

Meeko and Kiara don't care much for wet food either. They'll whine for it, but when they get it, it's a few licks, sniff, and wlak away. They do like the salmon feast, and the flaked tuna, shrimp, and something. Very stinky, and has dark blue label. Hope this helps. Glad to hear Mia is feeling a little better.

Mia, (and Derby),

When I first got my furkids, I read a few books about taking care of cats. Derby mentioned he gets human quality tuna sometimes. An alarm went off. I seem to remember something about that giving a kitty human grade tuna is bad for the kitty. Something about cats don't produce their own Vitamin E and when they eat human grade tuna, it actually reduces their level of Vitamin E. (Tuna for human consumption requires more processing and in that processing Vitamin E. is removed.) Wish I could remember where it was that I read that.

Dee, I found something about the downside of feeding human tuna to cats at this link -- http://neuro.vetmed.ufl.edu/Alt_med/Library/Monograph/taurine.html

When Kelly was having stomach trouble, his vet recommended Beech-Nut baby food, "Chicken & Chicken Broth". Kelly loved it, and we now give it to him once a week as a treat.

Fingers and Good Cat paws still crossed for Ms Mia...

In Fancy Feast, nutrition-wise you want the ones that have real meat as the first ingredients, and not meant byproducts or organ meats. And look for the lowest grain/flour content. I know this because the Woman bugs the holy bezoobies out of me about what I can and can't have.

This is the list the Woman came up with in her research:

Fish & shrimo
Ocean fish feast
gourmet chicken feast
cod, sole & shrimp
ocean whitefish & tuna
savory salmon
tender beef feast
chopped grill
beef & chicken feast

The ones with gravy are tasty but because they have so many grains and stuff, we only get that as a treat once in a while.

When I wasn't eating, though, the guy at the stabby place said to try organic baby turky food. I didn't eat it cause I still felt bad, but it smelled REALLY good and if they gave it to me now, I'd chow down.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I've been giving Ms. Mia Natural Balance dry food and they have canned as well. She's had a few cans every now and then, but never really dove in. Since she went to the vet's on Saturday, she been eating practically nothing but canned food, and eating it up. She still doesn't eat it all in one sitting but she's eating it all throughout the day. I have not seen the Wellness brand here and the vet doesn't sell it, though according to the motherhubbard website, another vet close by does. I might give it a try. I saw this article which had some good info about canned food. Now I know which Fancy Feast flavors are the good ones, I can mix it up with those as well. She's definitely doing well, back to her chatty self and we're glad.

Thank you Kelly. I knew there was a web address around here somewhere about it; but didn't know where.

I feed my furkids Purina Cat Chow and Kitten Chow (dry) and occasionally give them some 9-lives canned. (I should really give them more canned each week.) Some of mine prefer the kitten chow to cat chow even though they're over a year old.

My poodies like any of the ocean/fish flavors. They prefer fancy feast over the other flavors, but they want to try the new Sheba flavors that Edsel has suggested like crab and lobster so I promised them next grocery run. ~Poi Mom Jane
